Particularly promising research in 3D printed stents is taking place at?Northwestern Engineering. There, a team has developed a new?technique called projection micro stereolithography to fabricate incredibly small structures.
The scanner has a few minor annoyances. For example, the attached 6.75-foot (2-meter) USB cable isn’t long enough to move the scanner very far from the computer. This means that when scanning a large object (such as a person), you have to carry both the scanner and the computer around as you scan, or buy a USB extension cable. A wireless connection (such as Wi-Fi or Bluetooth) would have been preferable here, and would have made the scanner more flexible. A way to start or pause the scan from the scanner itself, rather than using the keyboard, also would have been beneficial.
The Scoobe3D has polarization with an additional camera. It can be used to scan a room of up to 300 square meters (3000 square feet). It can also be used to scan large objects measuring three by three meters. It can do this up to an accuracy of 0.1mm.

The build quality of the Photon is great for the cost, though some components are clearly of a cheaper design than we might like. None of the structural components are compromised, however, and the build plate and Z-axis screw rod feel sturdy, while the anodized resin tank has a thoroughly solid feel to it. The man responsible for all this is 67-year-old Hans Langer, one of the original entrepreneurs in the 3-D printing world, who started the company that produces these machines, EOS GmbH, 30 years ago. “I was able to see that we could open up a totally new world of manufacturing,” says Langer from his company’s airy and modern headquarters near Munich.?
Another limitation of MJ is the strength of the printed parts. MJ parts are structurally weak, meaning they’re not ideal for components that must?handle some kind of load.
Two of the most common materials used for printing plastic items are ABS and PLA. These materials become soft and malleable when they’re heated, meaning you can reuse material from old products to create new ones using a 3D printer. Regrinding ABS and reusing that as a 3D printing material is already being done. ABS is not nearly as environmentally friendly as PLA being a petroleum-based material. It can be reused multiple times, however. PLA is made from plants, most often corn. PLA is not perfect, seven liters of water are needed to make the material and corn is a food source. A PLA made from agricultural waste would be far superior. In other materials such as PET 3D printing materials have been successfully made from post-consumer recycled plastic bottles (mixed with around 10% new PET). Researchers are also looking into ways to use other natural substances as 3D printing material, such as algae, coffee grounds and cellulose, which is a structural component of plants’ primary cell walls.
